CHARTER OF THE CLASSICAL ACADEMY OF ARMS

FOCUS

The Classical Academy of Arms is a membership organization of individual fencing coaches dedicated to the preservation of the techniques and values of classical fencing and to their transmission to a new generation of classical fencers.  Classical fencing is defined as fencing, dry or steam, with the Foil, Duelling Sword (Epee), and Sabre using the techniques and commonly accepted rules of the period 1880 through 1939.

MISSION

The mission of the Academy is:

(1) the operation of the Classical Fencing Instructor Program and the certification of its graduates as Classical Fencing Demonstrators, Instructors, Provosts, and Masters.

(2) provision of standard training programs and skill progression qualification levels for fencers for use by its members in their clubs or salles d’armes.

(3) support for research and publication in the history and evolution of classical fencing and the actual techniques of instruction and fencing during the period 1880-1939.

(4) designation of clubs or salles operated by its members according to the requirements of the Academy as Classical Fencing Schools, with the ability to use a distinctive logo and the title in their marketing. Such requirements encourage continual raising of standards in teaching and knowledge.

(5) the publication of a regular electronic newsletter with information of value to classical fencing.

(6) the development of appropriate relations with other organizations of professional fencing coaches.

(7) to conduct such other activities of an educational nature as may be of benefit to the membership and to the sport of classical fencing.
