A Society for Classical Fencing Trainer Education, Development, Credentialing, and Support

CLASSICAL FENCING DEMONSTRATOR MARCH-DECEMBER 2022

Short Description:  The Classical Fencing Demonstrator course and certification is the first level coach development course offered by the Classical Academy of Arms, leading to a stackable series of four credentials.  Taught in the context of classical Schools of fencing (1880-1939), it prepares trainers to work as professionals and starts their education in coaching principles and sports science.  The course is based on the classical foil as the first weapon, consistent with period practice.  Although based in classical technique, modern fencing coaches will find it thoroughly grounded in modern coach development principles.

Clinic Accreditation and Alignment:  This clinic is conducted by the Classical Academy of Arms, a coach development program accredited by the National Committee for the Accreditation of Coaching Education.  Its contents are aligned with the National Standards for Sports Coaches.  This clinic is approved by the United States Fencing Coaches Association.

TEACHING HUTTON'S SABRE SYSTEM APR-JUN 2022

Short Description:  Alfred Hutton was one of the key figures in the rebirth of amateur fencing in England during the Victorian sports revival of the late 1800s.  As a former cavalry officer, he was also a strong advocate for the sabre as a military weapon.    This clinic provides an overview of Hutton’s dismounted sabre system as an important part of the history of sabre fencing and as a window into classical period teaching methods and the complexity of classical technique.  This is a Zoom clinic taught in 12 online sessions.

Clinic Accreditation and Alignment:  This clinic is conducted by the Classical Academy of Arms, a coach development program accredited by the National Committee for the Accreditation of Coaching Education.  Its contents are aligned with the National Standards for Sports Coaches and the requirements of the Academie d'Armes Internationale for initial qualification in Levels 1 through 4 and for continuing education for Levels 2, 3, and 4.

Dates:  Saturday sessions 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 April, 7, 14, 21, 28 May, 4, 11, 18 June at 10:00 am Eastern time.  The same lesson is repeated on the immediately following Monday at 7:30 pm Eastern time.  Participants may attend either or both sessions.

Course length: Twelve 45 minute sessions for a total of 9 contact hours.

Required Individual Equipment:  This clinic is presented online.  Participants should wear comfortable clothes that allow movement – fencing uniforms are not required.  In respect to the weapon and to provide a better feel of its performance under realistic conditions, we prefer that participants use a fencing glove.  Lessons in this series can be performed using the standard modern fencing sabre.  Use of a modern reproduction of the Hutton sabre pattern is not required.
